Youngest Heroes
Children of Active Military Stationed at Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River Take Part in Arts and Crafts Projects to Enhance Creative Expression During Deployment
JACKSONVILLE, NC – April marks the Month of the Military Child, and in support of the effort to honor America’s smallest and bravest heroes Combat Creations Scrapbook Store & More held an event each Saturday allowing children of active duty military to participate in various arts and crafts activities, while also paying tribute to the men and women serving our country. In addition, children were taught another form of expression to use as an outlet when coping with feelings often experienced during a family member’s deployment.
Most recently, a large group of local children from Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station created individualized 8x8 layouts to be added to the World’s Largest and Greatest Scrapbook. Connect And Join, a family support and education services publishing company, has made it their goal to collect 120,000 scrapbook pages to give to each member of the armed forces that is currently deployed.
Taking part in a wide array of arts and crafts projects allows military children the opportunity to express their emotions creatively. As kids deal with the trials and tribulations surrounding a family member’s deployment, many find it difficult to express their feelings verbally. However, utilizing art provides military children an opportunity to express their emotions creatively and in turn, gives them yet another form of communication in which to convey their thoughts and experiences with their deployed family member.
