Use hand quilting to say what you feel!
Materials needed:
- Dual Duty Plus® Hand Quilting thread: one spool
- Print Fabric: enough to cut a 4" x 6" rectangle
- Solid Fabric: enough to cut a 4" x 6" rectangles
- Felt Square
- Cotton Batting: enough to cut a 4" x 6" rectangle
- Hand Sewing needle: Size 8 or 9
- Cardboard for patterns
- Scissors
- Glue-stick
- Water-soluble marking pen or washable marker
- Optional: Craft scissors with scalloped or zig zag blades or pinking shears
Instructions:
- Make patterns by cutting a 4" x 6" rectangle and a 2" x 4" rectangle piece from cardboard.
- Trace the 4" x 6" pattern on the solid fabric, print fabric, felt and the batting. Cut out fabric & batting. Place the 2" x 4" pattern in the middle of the print fabric and trace around it (There should be a 1" border of the print fabric showing around the cardboard.) Cut out the center.
- Using a glue stick, lightly put a few dots of glue on the wrong side of the print fabric. Place the print fabric, right side up, onto the right side of the other solid rectangle. Place this with the right side facing you, on top of the batting. Put a few pins through all layers to hold together.
- Cut a piece of quilting thread about 20" long. Thread the needle, and tie a small knot in the end. Pull thread through the print fabric 1/4" from the cut edge of the middle rectangle. Sew stitches around the middle square. To stop, sew a stitch in place and loop thread through last stitch. Cut.
- LIGHTLY write a word that you like (it could be someone?s name) on the solid fabric in the center using the water soluble marker or a washable marker. Using the needle and thread, sew following your markings. To get from one letter to the next, carry the thread across the back of your work.
- Remove marking by dabbing with a wet sponge or rinsing.
- Put this quilted piece, right side facing you, on top of felt. Sew stitches around outer edge, 1/4" from the cut edge. If you have pinking shears or craft scissors with a fancy edge, use them to trim the outer edges, being careful not to cut your stitches.
