Skill Level: Easy
Age Level: 7 to teen
A Yo Yo Rosette can be added to just about anything-- a pony tail elastic, head band or barrette. You can also sew several onto a jacket or jeans.
Materials needed:
- Dual Duty Thread for Buttons & Crafts: one spool
- Fabric: Green print, Pink print, Yellow print, enough to cut a 6" circle
- Buttons: 5/8" pink button, 1/2" yellow button. (flat with 2 or 4 holes work best)
- Hand Sewing needle: Size 6 or 7
- Ribbon 1" wide: 1 yard
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Print out the circle patterns. Cut out circles.
- Trace circles on fabric and cut out one 6? green circle, one 4? pink circle and one 3? yellow circle.
- Cut a piece of thread about 25? long. Thread the needle, but do not tie a knot in the thread. With the wrong side of the green fabric facing you, stick the needle through the fabric about 1/8 inch from cut edge, and take a little stitch. Pull the thread through and leave a 3? tail. Continue sewing around the edge of the circle until you have stitched all the way around. Leave a 3? tail of thread. (Picture 1)
-
Pull the two thread ends to gather the edges into the center of the circle. Tie the two
thread tails into a knot and cut off extra thread. Repeat with the pink and yellow circles.
Hint: You will not need as long a piece of thread for the smaller circles. (Picture 2)
Tip: Use Button & Craft thread because it is thick and strong and will not break when you pull on it to gather the circles. - Cut ends of ribbon on the diagonal so it will not ravel.
- Stack yo yos, one of each size, at the center of the ribbon. With the needle and thread, stick the needle through the ribbon then the yo yos, pulling the thread through the center of the yo yos. Take several stitches to secure the yo yos to the ribbon. Stack buttons, yellow on pink, on the center of the stacked yo yos. Stick the needle through the ribbon and yo yos again, and then though the holes in the buttons. Sew up and down through the holes in the buttons several times, ending with the needle on the ribbon side. (Picture 3). Tie off thread and cut.
- Put this quilted piece, right side facing you, on top of felt. Sew stitches around outer edge, 1/4" from the cut edge. If you have pinking shears or craft scissors with a fancy edge, use them to trim the outer edges, being careful not to cut your stitches.
